5/11 Saturday
Had a bad night's sleep. I was worried about finding the way to the hotel in Rome and then the airport. It's going to be hell. Antonio drove ahead of us to the square to get a stamp on our receipt. We took the A1 Autostrada toward Rome but had to turn back for Elaine's purse. Lost one hour but could have been worse. We stopped at the Autogrill for lunch. It goes over the freeway so you see the cars zooming toward you as you sit there eating. We went through a cafeteria type setup but with good Italian food. I liked it. We got to Rome with no problem but at the hotel (Atlantic Garden) they only had two singles and they were on different floors!! We weren't going to put up with that.We ended up being put up at another hotel at their expense. Looks like we may have come out a lot better. Hotel Cicerone is anA-1 hotel and is much nicer looking. Very modern and the desk personnel very helpful. It's too late to return the car so we have to park it in the hotel garage until Monday. We rested, Elaine showered and we bussed to the Trevi Fountain after getting bus tickets at the tobacco store right across the street. Lots of young people hanging out there.![]()
It was fun to just sit and watch.
Now we're back near the hotel at "Al Palazzacci" [via Ennio Quirino Visconti 66-68] near via Cicerone. I'm having spaghetti alle Vongole Veraci which is with baby clams, garlic, olive oil and hot pepper. Elaine's having fresh vegetable soup (zuppa di verdure). Then I'm having tortellini in brodo. The soup is great! Then I'm having Maialino Sardo Arrosto which is roasted Sardinian Pork and Elaine the Saute di Fruiti di Mare. The pork is too fatty and bony and I didn't care for the flavor. We had strawberries with vanilla ice cream for dessert.Fresh and good.
