From my daily journal: Page Two
4/18/02 Thursday
I'm up at 7 am and down having breakfast letting Elaine sleep. I was awake for a couple hours just yearning to get up. Left a note for her and $2 gold tip (thanks to my sister Barb) for "La Chambre fille" on my pillow. Went down to the corner cafe, Le Royal Jussieu, for hot chocolate and spent 2 hours doing post cards. Elaine helped at the end. Then we loaded up books, cameras, etc. and bussed over to Gard due East. Walked to Nord Gate then thru it. Thought we'd be training out from here but that wasn't the case. We were looking for a stained glass studio that the desk person at the hotel had seen here. It's the Arab quarterbut no studio opposite the hospital as we were told it would be. We walked and walked more. Bought bananas
and finally made it to Sacré-Cur.
They have a Merry-Go Round
at the bottom of the hill. (We later saw it in the movie "Amalie") What a church. Took funicular to the top-our bus pass worked fine for that. Lots of great mosaics and glass. We Metroed back to the hotel to unload and ended up taking a quick nap. Then we bussed to a restaurant we read in the Food of Paris book Teri had given us. Well, that didn't work out so good. We had great salads. Mine blue cheese, endive. Elaine's cheeses melted over little baguettes and walnuts and veggies. Main dish- Elaine had salmon. I had what I thought was going to be pork ribs. The waitress didn't speak English and pointed to her stomach-I thought it was her ribs. Ended up with tripe in pigs stomach.
Not so good. Left 99% of it.
Bordeau wine, not as good tasting as last night's. We got here about 7:45 and it was fairly empty. Now 8:45 and it's getting full. Luckily we brought the umbrella 'cause we needed it heading for the Metro. Saw in internet place and stopped to check and send email. The keyboards are laid out differently. Took awhile to find some characters. Anyway- off to the Eiffel tower.
It's pretty at night all lit up.¤ 9.90 each to ride to the top. It was cool seeing the spotlight
pierced by the rain and seeing the rain falling straight down from our great height. We were the very last ones off as they chased us out
and we headed back to the hotel in plenty of time tonight so as not to be caught out after things stop running.
